Rather than relying on traditional riding rings, Westpro’s Tire Drive Agglomerator uses heavy-duty tires to support and rotate the drum. This configuration provides a high-capacity solution across a wide range of standard-tonnage applications while simplifying several mechanical aspects of the system. Drum alignment is less critical, installation can be streamlined, and the elimination of complex sprockets, machined riding rings, and large gearing can reduce spare-parts requirements and simplify maintenance activities.

Westpro Tire Drive Agglomerators include VFD control, an adjustable slope mechanism and an integrated hydraulic maintenance package with a standard tire drive. These features can provide improved operational and maintenance control compared to a chain or gear drive. Drum speed tuning, residence time adjustments, inching capabilities and hydraulic jacking cradles are now standard features for this configuration.

The key to the tire drive design is simplification without reduction in purpose. The objective is still a mine-duty rotating drum capable of continuously agglomerating abrasive ore. The difference is in how that rotation is achieved.

Cuando una operación de lixiviación en pila enfrenta problemas de permeabilidad, canalización o recuperación desigual, por lo general se culpa a la plataforma de lixiviación. Sin embargo, el síntoma visible puede haberse originado mucho antes, mientras el mineral triturado, la humedad y el reactivo se mezclaban en el tambor de aglomeración.

¿Qué es la aglomeración en la lixiviación en pilas?

La lixiviación en pilas es un proceso que consiste en distribuir mineral triturado, en forma de aglomerados, sobre una pila de lixiviación y aplicar una solución lixiviante para disolver los metales de interés y obtener una solución rica en metales, conocida como PLS (Pregnant Leach Solution). Esta solución es posteriormente enviada a la siguiente etapa del proceso para recuperar el metal de valor.

El mineral triturado contiene naturalmente una gran cantidad de partículas finas, conocidas como “finos”, que primero deben aglomerarse para formar aglomerados uniformes antes de ser enviados a la pila de lixiviación. Pero, ¿por qué?

Sin la unión de estas partículas finas, estas se comportan como polvo en un filtro de café: pueden migrar, compactarse y llenar los espacios intersticiales entre las partículas de roca de mayor tamaño, reduciendo considerablemente la permeabilidad y provocando canalización, fenómeno en el que la solución lixiviante evita determinadas zonas del mineral en lugar de atravesarlas de manera uniforme

Una buena permeabilidad, es decir, la capacidad de la solución para desplazarse de manera libre y uniforme a través de la columna de mineral, es fundamental para mantener una cinética adecuada y maximizar la recuperación global del mineral.

Mediante la aglomeración, las partículas finas del mineral triturado se unen entre sí, creando una estructura más abierta y porosa. Esto permite que la solución lixiviante fluya de manera más uniforme a través de la pila y entre en contacto de forma más efectiva con los minerales de valor.

El resultado es un proceso de lixiviación más eficiente, que contribuye a recuperar un mayor porcentaje del mineral valioso contenido en el mineral procesado.

La pila de lixiviación es donde aparecen los síntomas

La lixiviación en pila es un sistema interconectado. La trituración establece la distribución del tamaño de las partículas. La aglomeración acondiciona el mineral. El transporte y el apilamiento influyen en la degradación y la segregación del material. Posteriormente, la irrigación, pone de manifiesto las fortalezas o debilidades creadas por esos pasos anteriores. Optimizar solo la etapa final conlleva el riesgo de tratar el síntoma en lugar de la causa raíz.

Un mayor tiempo de residencia no necesariamente es mejor si el material se maneja de manera incorrecta.

Un tambor robusto, un sistema de accionamiento correctamente seleccionado, una adecuada protección contra el desgaste y una configuración que facilite el mantenimiento no sustituyen el diseño del proceso, pero ayudan a mantener las condiciones de operación previstas. La confiabilidad es importante porque un desempeño mecánico variable se traduce rápidamente en una calidad variable de los aglomerados.

Por qué los proyectos a gran altitud merecen una discusión especial

Los proyectos de oro y cobre en zonas de gran altitud, como Chile y Argentina, pueden combinar mineral abrasivo, requisitos de alto rendimiento, altitud, cambios bruscos de temperatura, logística remota y horarios de operación exigentes. Esas condiciones hacen que la selección de equipo genérico sea arriesgada. When a heap leach operation struggles with permeability, channeling, or uneven recovery, the pad usually receives the blame. But the visible symptom may have started earlier, while crushed ore, moisture, and reagent were being brought together in the agglomeration drum.

What is Agglomeration in Heap Leaching?

Heap leaching is the process of spreading crushed ore, in the form of agglomerates, across a heap leach pad and applying a leaching solution to dissolve the desired metals into a pregnant leach solution (PLS). That solution is then sent to the next stage of processing to recover the valuable metal. The crushed ore, which naturally contains a large amount of fine particles known as “fines”, must first be bound into uniform agglomerates before it can be sent to the heap leach pad. But why?

Without binding the fines together, they act like dust in a coffee filter; they can migrate, compact, and fill the interstitial voids between larger rock particles, severely reducing permeability and causing channeling, where the leaching solution bypasses sections of the ore. Good permeability, or the ability of the solution to move freely and uniformly through the ore column, is essential for maintaining proper kinetics and maximizing overall mineral recovery. By binding the crushed ore, or fines, together through agglomeration, a more open and porous structure is created. This allows the leaching solution to flow more evenly through the heap and contact the valuable minerals more effectively. The result is a more efficient leaching process that helps recover a greater percentage of the valuable mineral from the ore.

The Heap Leach Pad is Where the Symptoms Appear

Heap leaching is a connected system. Crushing establishes the particle-size distribution. Agglomeration conditions the ore. Conveying and stacking influence degradation and segregation. Irrigation then exposes the strengths or weaknesses created by those earlier steps. Optimizing only the final stage risks treating the symptom rather than the root cause.

Instead of asking: “Why is the pad under-performing?”, consider asking: “Are we consistently producing agglomerates that can survive handling, stacking, and irrigation while preserving the void space needed for solution flow?”

How Do Agglomerators Impact Heap Leaching Operations?

Feed Consistency

Agglomeration performance begins with the material entering the drum. Changes in fines content, clay content, moisture, and feed rate can change the way particles build into pellets. A system designed around one operating point may struggle if the real feed varies widely and the controls do not respond.

Moisture and Reagent Distribution

Adding the right total amount of liquid is not the same as distributing it effectively. Spray-bar location, nozzle selection, pressure, coverage, and control all influence whether moisture and binder contact the ore evenly. Localized over-wetting can create sticky masses and buildup; under-wetting can leave fines unbound. Both conditions reduce consistency.

Residence Time and Drum Rotation

Drum diameter, length, slope, speed, lifter arrangement, and feed rate work together to determine residence time and particle motion. The objective is controlled tumbling that encourages fines to adhere without excessive impact or attrition. More time is not automatically better if the material is being handled in the wrong way.

Mechanical Repeatability

A robust drum, properly selected drive, wear protection, and accessible maintenance layout do not replace process design, but they help the process hold its intended operating conditions. Reliability matters because variable mechanical performance quickly becomes variable pellet quality.

Why High-Altitude Projects Deserves Their Own Conversation

Gold and copper projects in high-elevation locations, such as Chile and Argentina, can combine abrasive ore, high-throughput requirements, elevation, temperature swings, remote logistics, and demanding operating schedules. Those conditions make generic equipment selection risky. The agglomerator must be configured around the ore and the site, not selected as a stand-alone rotating drum. As projects advance, early decisions about ore preparation can shape the stability, maintainability, and scalability of the eventual heap-leach circuit.
