Tire, Chain, or Gear Drive Agglomerator?

Publication Date: September 23rd, 2026

Selecting the Right Drive-Type for Your Operation

Chain, tire, and gear drive systems are all credible agglomerator configurations. The question is not which technology wins in the abstract, but which drive system best matches the project as a whole.

Here’s what you should consider:

  • Required torque
  • Startup conditions
  • Feed variability
  • Installation requirements
  • process control
  • Maintenance access
  • Spare-parts strategy
  • Site environment
  • Life-cycle expectations

Drive Selection Is an Operating Decision

The initial quotation only captures part of its eventual cost. Installation complexity, maintenance requirements, spare parts, labour, and exposure to downtime can all extend the cost of an agglomerator well beyond the original purchase order. A drive system that appears attractive based on capital cost alone may look considerably different once twenty years of operation are considered. Understanding the specific requirements of the application, and the people who will operate and maintain the equipment, should be one of the first steps in agglomerator selection.

A high-strength, steel frame is utilized for safe, high-capacity operation and increased equipment longevity in harsh conditions.

An optional, yet key, feature is the Hydraulic Slope Mechanism:

  • Provides operators with precise control over residence time through real-time drum angle adjustments thanks to a high-power hydraulic lift system.

Fully Automated System

With integrated safety features and real-time process monitoring, this control system gives the user full view and control over their operations.

Rather than relying on traditional riding rings, Westpro’s Tire Drive Agglomerator uses heavy-duty tires to support and rotate the drum. This configuration provides a high-capacity solution across a wide range of standard-tonnage applications while simplifying several mechanical aspects of the system. Drum alignment is less critical, installation can be streamlined, and the elimination of complex sprockets, machined riding rings, and large gearing can reduce spare-parts requirements and simplify maintenance activities.

Westpro Tire Drive Agglomerators include VFD control, an adjustable slope mechanism and an integrated hydraulic maintenance package with a standard tire drive. These features can provide improved operational and maintenance control compared to a chain or gear drive. Drum speed tuning, residence time adjustments, inching capabilities and hydraulic jacking cradles are now standard features for this configuration.

The key to the tire drive design is simplification without reduction in purpose. The objective is still a mine-duty rotating drum capable of continuously agglomerating abrasive ore. The difference is in how that rotation is achieved.

Multiple smaller drive units are incorporated instead of relying exclusively on one large drive motor. That approach can offer advantages in procurement, maintenance, replacement strategy, and operational redundancy. Lead times can be another important consideration. Due to the simplification of the drive system, a Westpro Tire Drive Agglomerator can be engineered, manufactured, delivered, and installed within an aggressive project schedule.

A developing gold heap-leach project where substantial throughput is required but the operation also places a premium on straightforward installation, accessible maintenance, process flexibility, and manageable spare-parts requirements. This combination can make tire drive especially compelling.

It can also be valuable at remote or high-altitude mining operations where every specialist maintenance intervention becomes more complicated simply because of where the equipment is located.

A properly engineered chain drive system offers a different kind of mechanical simplicity. This drive option provides rugged power transmission using components and maintenance practices that are familiar throughout the mineral processing industry. For an agglomerator handling demanding loads and substantial throughput, giving maintenance teams a system whose major wear components can be inspected directly is a major advantage. With appropriate access, operators can establish routine inspection and lubrication programs around the chain and sprockets rather than working with a more enclosed transmission – maximizing the system’s operational uptime and ensuring those high throughput demands are met.

Achieving Longevity with the Chain Drive Agglomerator:

  • Correct chain sizing
  • Sprocket selection
  • Alignment
  • Lubrication
  • Guarding
  • Environmental protection
  • Maintenance access

Other Items to Consider:

  • Dust
  • Moisture
  • Abrasive material
  • Corrosive reagents
  • Site conditions

A large operation with substantial tonnage, an experienced mechanical maintenance team, established inspection routines, and a preference for robust components that can be readily accessed and serviced. That project profile plays directly to the strengths of chain drive.

As agglomerator size, operating load, and required torque increase, gear drive becomes increasingly compelling. Gear drive Agglomerators are engineered for the highest-tonnage applications, where efficient power transmission, positive drive engagement, precise torque delivery, and long-term drivetrain performance become central design priorities.

This makes gear drive best suited to very large rotating drums and operations where maintaining dependable torque under demanding production conditions takes precedence over minimizing mechanical complexity. A properly enclosed gear-drive system can also protect critical drive components from direct exposure to the surrounding operating environment.

Those advantages come with their own engineering considerations:

  • Gear alignment
  • Foundations
  • Lubrication
  • Inspection procedures
  • Installation tolerance
  • Access for specialist maintenance

A major expansion processing very high tonnage around the clock. The drum needs to be large, the operating load is substantial, startup torque is significant, production interruptions can be costly, and the project is designed around a long operating life.

In that environment, the additional engineering associated with gear drive may not be a disadvantage at all. It may be exactly what makes the configuration appropriate.
